When getting work done on your home, you want to make sure that you choose the right person to do the job in order to prevent problems later on. Many people are tempted to hire a big-name home improvement contractor that is located in another city or town, but that is not always the best decision. In fact, there are several reasons why you should hire a local home improvement contractor instead of looking for help outside your area.
1. Bigger is not always better, especially when it comes to contractors. Big contracting companies are not always able to give you the kind of attention that you want because they are dealing with so many other projects. A local contractor will give your project more personalized attention and work to make your job something special, not just another task to finish.
2. It is sometimes thought that contractors in other areas are able to offer better prices on their services, but such is not always the case. Local home improvement contractors also work out special deals with suppliers to get the best materials at the best prices and pass on their discounts to you. Because they tend to be smaller, local home improvement contractors tend to have closer relationships with local building product manufacturers and sellers, helping them to negotiate excellent deals.
3. Local home improvement contractors are usually more concerned to make sure they do the job right the first time. Big-name contractors in other areas are often unconcerned to do a quality job the first time because they believe a little negative publicity every now and then will not hurt them. Local home improvement contractors, however, know the importance of good word-of-mouth advertising and work hard for you because one bad report can hurt their entire bottom line.

It is good to see someone hyping the local contractor. I think they tend to be more responsible when they are working in their local area. Also, it can save you money on things like trip charges. We own a small remodeling firm and we tend to stay local to keep fuel costs down. If we have to work farther away it does cost the customer more because it costs us more to get there.
Also, working in a small market, our reputation is key since most of our work comes from word of mouth.
I have a blog about choosing home improvement contractors and what to expect. Feel free to check it out at http://taylordhome.com
