Important Questions to Ask Your Fencing Contractor

That’s it! You’ve had it. Fido has escaped from the yard one too many times. You’re tired of your neighbors complaining, not to mention scared to death that one day he may be hit by a passing car. So, you’ve decided it’s time to get a fence.

Following are four questions to ask a fence contractor before signing on the dotted line.

1. How Long Have You Been In Business? Many companies that do home improvement projects are fly-by-night operations. You want a company that has a solid track record in your community. That way, if there’s a problem after the project is done, you’ll be able to get in touch.

Note: While length of time in business is important, what’s equally as important are local, verifiable references. Ask for them – and check them.

2. Do You Provide a Warranty? Professional, reputable fencing contractors provide quality work. But, this is home improvement. Mishaps happen; things go wrong. Hence, you want a company that provides a warranty, specifically on workmanship. Find out specifically what their warranty covers, eg, is it parts, or is it just labor and craftsmanship?

3. Do You Provide Financing? Fido’s latest antics have come at the most inconvenient time financially. Therefore, a fence contractor that offers on-the-spot financing can be a real budget saver. Be sure to read the fine print, eg, how long is the financing for, at what interest rate, is there a prepayment penalty, etc.

4. Do You Have Commercial Liability Insurance? Many homeowners are unaware of it, but if a contractor is hurt while working on their home and the company does not have insurance, you may be liable. Don’t hire any fence contractor who does not have commercial liability insurance.

If a fencing contractor has all of this and the price is right, finally, you can keep Fido where he belongs – in your fenced yard.
