Sliding glass doors are functional parts of many homes. But if home security experts had their way, they’d probably fall by the wayside. This is because they can present so many problems when it comes to home security.
Following are three things you can do to secure the sliding glass doors in your home.
1. Block the Track: This is one of the simplest ways to prevent an intruder from entering through a sliding glass door. Many homeowners don’t know it, but manufacturers of sliding glass doors sell custom-cut stoppers. What these do is stop the door from sliding open at all, even if the door is unlocked.
2. Prevent “Track Lifting”: What we mean by this is prevent the door from being lifted off its track. To do this, simply install a locking device you can get from any home improvement store. The door will still be able to slide open, but no one will be able to lift it from the track.
3. Regularly Check the Lock: Locks on any type of door wear out over time. This is because locks hook into holes on a wall. With every opening, closing and locking of a door, what’s known as smoothing happens. Smoothing is when a lock slides out of a hole because the area has become too “smooth.” A competent locksmith can recommend the ideal type of lock(s) – and other door security options — for sliding glass doors that are long lasting.
Home Safety Tip: For a home security checkup, consult your local door contractor or home security expert.
