Kitchen islands are very popular. Look at almost any home improvement show that features a kitchen remodeling project, and you will often hear it mentioned as a desired feature.
Why Kitchen Islands Are So Popular
There are a couple of reasons why kitchen islands are so popular: (i) they add more storage space; and (ii) they fit the way modern families live. Whether it’s feeding hungry kids an informal lunch, or entertaining visiting friends and family, it’s easy to have everyone gather around a kitchen island.
Following are three things to consider when selecting a kitchen island.
- Size Matters: The size of your kitchen will go a long way in determining which size island to choose. It should be large enough to provide the additional storage and working space you need, but small enough to easily maneuver around. Remember, an island is supposed to add to the kitchen’s aesthetics and functionality; not detract from it.
- Stable or Movable: Some kitchen islands are mobile; others are stable. Usually, stationary islands are chosen for larger kitchens, simply because they can accommodate them. For smaller kitchens, mobile kitchen islands are an excellent investment because they can be moved when not in use, making the space more versatile.
- Tricked Out, or Not: What we mean by this is, do you want a simple kitchen island to be used just for space, eg, eating, drinking and doing homework? Or, do you want it to be a food preparation station as well, eg, one to wash vegetables, dishes, etc.? If so, you need to add plumbing for a sink and faucet.
No matter what type of kitchen island you settle on, a professional contractor should be consulted to make sure that what you want can indeed be done (ie, can plumbing be added in a certain spot, how much will it cost, how long will it take, etc.).

Great article! I couldn’t agree more and once again - size does matter (although my husband might argue differently). As much as islands are great, they do not work in every kitchen. Smaller kitchens however, can be well served by an island on wheels that can be tucked away when not in use. As well, if budget is an issue, a quick search on your local craigslist will often reveal a number of used islands that might just fit your bill!
